The Humphries Family

The Humphries family is a very ancient one and traces descent direct to Sir Robert de Umfreville, a knight and companion of William the Conquerer who invaded England in 1066. Humphrey de Bohun, son of Sir Robert was high-constable under William and from him sprang the earls of Hereford, Essex and Northampton. The name derives originally from Hamme vrai and is variously rendered as Homfray, Humfry, Onfroy, Humphreville and Humphreys.

The first American ancestor was Michael Humphrey who came from Lyme Regis, England, about 1640 and settled first in Windsor, later Simmsbury, Connecticut.
